With Fall right around the corner, I have a serious itch to go ”back to school” shopping. Fall is my absolute favourite season. There are many reasons why I love this season: the colours that Fall brings, the crisp air, the fashion (ugh, I love scarves, cozy sweaters, and booties!), the anticipation of the holiday seasons (eeee! break out all the decorations immediately!), football, and the delicious comfort food that accompanies this time of year. Apple and pumpkin everything, please! Oh, and my husband’s delicious chili. Mmm.
In the past, I have had more opportunity to spend hours upon hours de-cluttering and cleaning out each room in our home. It’s not as easy this year with my little bestie in tow but I have been tackling my closet, which truthfully was in dire need of a change-up.
I was apprehensive to even look at my closet + drawers as I am in an ”in-between” stage of my clothes. And no, I am not talking about the seasons. I’m fully talking about my post-baby bod. But that’s a different post for a different time.
As most of you know, I’ve been reading the best-selling + ever-so-popular book ”The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. This tiny book is chocked-full of wisdom + magic tips and tricks to help you de-clutter your home. I highly recommend it!
I am without a doubt a person who holds onto things purely because I would feel bad getting rid of it. When I was going through my clothes, I found myself saying the silliest things such as, “someone gave this to me a bajilion years ago”, “I spent a lot of money on that”, or “I’m sure that will fit me again”. Nothing gets accomplished this way.
I decided to take Marie Kondo’s advice and surround myself with the clothing that sparked joy in my life. Yes, I have an old Hollister hoodie that I am pretty sure is a thousand years old that still brings me joy. It’s the best campfire + cottage sweater ever. Kondo’s tidying method is addictive. Why shouldn’t we surround ourselves with the clothes, books, decor, etc that sparks joy in our hearts?
Originally, I was pretty convinced I was going to chuck everything and we would have nothing left in our home. But not to worry, her focus is less on getting rid of everything and much more on keeping the items that spark joy. Ugh, I love it so much. So much.
Does it spark joy? If yes, keep it. If not, donate or discard. It’s liberating! I currently have three bags of clothes + shoes to donate and I’m thrilled!
And don’t get me started on Kondo’s amazing method of folding clothing. It really creates more space and organization within your drawers/closet. I live for this shit.
It was a liberating experience and I am looking forward to moving onto the next category that Kondo suggests: books. Eee! I also tend to hold on to so many books. Wish me luck!
Surround yourself with things that spark joy! You deserve it!
XO
PS How many times did I say “joy” in this post… for real.
